TURBOCHARGED ENGINES REQUIRE SPECIAL OILS
The stereotype about the poor quality of Russian oil has remained since the Soviet era of scarcity, when car owners had no choice and poured into cars the oil that service stations could offer. On that oil, the engines of "Zhiguli" cars would run for 60,000 km and then require a major overhaul. Therefore, when foreign cars began to be massively imported to the Russian market in the 90s and a flood of imported lubricants poured in, people were amazed by the capabilities of the foreign auto industry and concluded that imported was better. 30 years have passed since then, and the situation has changed.
Today, as a result of globalization, which has also affected the standardization of requirements for lubricants,
Russian manufacturers develop oil not according to the outdated GOST, but in accordance with modern
international standards. For example, the development of Rosneft Magnum motor oils was carried out
by Russian research institutes. Their tasks included:
- large-scale research to identify the needs of customers from different regions of Russia;
- analysis of the country's vehicle fleet, which varies greatly in Moscow, Kaliningrad, and Vladivostok;
- creation of engine oil for different climatic conditions, as well as for new cars and vehicles with a significant service life.
The largest automakers Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen (brands Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat), Renault, Porsche, Volvo approved Rosneft Magnum Ultratec oils based on the results of a complex of laboratory and bench tests in real car engines.
It is not necessary to use the brand of oil
recommended by the automaker.
The oil must meet the requirements in the vehicle's technical documentation:
- viscosity grade;
- performance level according to API, ACEA, ILSAC;
- specific manufacturer specifications.
For example, Rosneft Magnum Ultratec A3 5W-40 oil is licensed under API SN and has approvals: MB-Approval 229.5, VW 502.00/505.00, Renault RN 0700/0710, Porsche A40.
The price of Russian oils is lower than the cost of imported ones, while in terms of quality, domestic oils are on par with foreign ones.
The most expensive oil is not always suitable for a particular car. For example, low-ash oils are designed specifically for engines equipped with exhaust gas aftertreatment systems (DPF, SCR). Oil with reduced sulfated ash content extends the service life of the engine with DPF, and reducing the amount of sulfur and phosphorus extends the life of the engine with SCR. However, all this has no advantages for engines without exhaust aftertreatment systems. In this case, using low-ash oils is a waste of money for the consumer.
The price of engine oil consists of the cost of its base, additives, and markups for additional expenses, which include customs duties and transportation costs. The final cost of imported goods is also affected by the exchange rate. Russian engine oils are produced from domestic raw materials at local production facilities and do not depend on the growth of the dollar and euro exchange rates.
Rosneft has its own production of mineral and synthetic base oils. The most modern technologies and equipment are used in the development of oils.
The Rosneft Magnum line has more than 20 varieties of motor oils. In each individual type of Magnum oil, precisely those properties are maximally enhanced that are most important for a specific segment of consumers.
For example, Rosneft Magnum Cleantec oil is designed for cars older than 10 years. It contains more detergent additives and ensures trouble-free operation of high-mileage engines.
Rosneft Magnum Runtec oil is designed to extend service intervals.
Rosneft Magnum Coldect oil facilitates engine starting at low temperatures.
Motor oils on store shelves already contain an additive package. Oil has in its composition approximately 85% base and 15% functional additives.
Rosneft Magnum oils include a balanced additive package that protects the engine from wear, ensures easy starting in frosts, and prevents deposits on parts.
Each additionally used component in the finished oil can lead to the enhancement of one product property and the weakening of others, which will lead to a decrease in the overall efficiency of the oil used.
The introduction of additives in oil production is a complex technological process that takes into account the mixture temperature, mixing speed, and pressure in the reactor. Thanks to this, the correct interaction of components is ensured and the finished product is obtained. It is impossible to provide such conditions by simply pouring a chemical reagent into the engine.
ENGINE OIL HAS MULTIPLE PERFORMANCE PROPERTIES.
The detergent-dispersant properties of the oil are among the most important. These properties are characterized by the ability of the oil to prevent the formation of deposits on the inner surface of internal combustion engine parts, to dissolve and retain small soot particles (a product of incomplete fuel combustion) within its own volume. Thus, soot particles do not "settle" on metal surfaces, leaving them clean, while the oil itself acquires a dark color.
Therefore, darkening of the oil is a positive effect that characterizes the performance of the oil in the engine.
The illuminated or intermittently flashing oil pressure lamp on the car's dashboard may indicate an insufficient oil level in the engine, malfunctions of the oil pump or oil filter, an increase in the gap between engine parts due to increased wear, ingress of fuel or coolant into the engine oil, as well as incorrectly selected oil.
If the viscosity grade is chosen incorrectly, the oil will not be able to form a continuous lubricating film on engine parts, which can lead to metal-to-metal friction, and, as a result, to increased wear. Therefore, it is recommended to take a responsible approach to choosing the oil viscosity grade.
The technical service «Rosneft Lubricants» Lubepro Navigator will help you choose the oil suitable for your car.
Semi-synthetic and synthetic (hydrocracked) bases (base oils) are compatible with each other, as semi-synthetic is the result of mixing synthetic and mineral bases. But the finished oil contains not only the base, but also special chemical compounds – functional additives, specially selected by the oil manufacturer. Mixing different oils can lead to undesirable chemical reactions, imbalance of the additive package, and loss of lubricant quality, which will subsequently lead to engine wear and damage.
You can get an expert assessment of the possibility of mixing oils by contacting the hotline of Rosneft Lubricants hotline@rosneft.ru or by phone 8-800-200-1070
The choice of engine oil, besides viscosity, also depends on the level of performance properties (for example, antioxidant, low-temperature, anti-wear, detergent-dispersant, oil evaporation index, and others).
To make oil selection easier for the consumer, international classifications have been developed, containing a set of standard values for a large range of the above-mentioned performance properties.
The following classifications are used by international automakers:
- API – a classification created by the American Petroleum Institute;
- ACEA – a classification of the Association des Constructeurs Européens des Automobiles;
- ILSAC – a classification of the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee.
The vehicle owner's manual contains specific specifications according to which you need to choose the oil (for example, API SN, ACEA A5/B5, ILSAC GL-5, VW 502 00/505 00, etc.).
Specifications are also indicated on the labels of oil canisters, making the choice easier for the consumer.
Major automakers indicate their own specifications in the vehicle owner's manual. For example, specifications: Mercedes-Benz – MB 229.5, VAG Group (Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda) – VW 502 00/505 00.
In the Rosneft engine oil range, products of various viscosity grades are presented, as well as oils of different API, ACEA, ILSAC classifications.
For example:
- oils meeting API SN (one of the most common API classes) - Magnum Ultratec, Magnum Coldtec, and others;
- oils with ACEA A3/B4 specification - Magnum Ultratec A3;
- oils of the energy-saving oils class ACEA A5/B5 - Magnum Ultratec A5;
- oils with ILSAC GL-5 specification (Magnum Ultratec FE), developed specifically for Japanese and Korean cars.
Oil consumption due to burn-off, as a rule, is in the range of 0.1 – 2.5% of fuel consumption per 100 km (each equipment manufacturer will have a specific value, without a range, indicated in the vehicle owner's manual). It is necessary to understand that consumption depends on many factors: engine condition, operating conditions, driving style, and the correctness of oil selection.
Rosneft oils have low burn-off consumption, which meets international API, ACEA standards and is confirmed by tests. For example, Rosneft Magnum Ultratec motor oils, as well as Ultratec A3 and Ultratec C3, have a burn-off consumption 30-40% lower than the API SN standard (the volatility of Rosneft oils according to the Noack method is 9-10% with API SN requirements of no more than 15%).
Modern car designers strive to create engines of maximum power with minimum engine volume. One of the structural elements that increase car power is the installation of a turbocharger. However, this solution does not directly affect engine oil recommendations.
Therefore, for example, the VAG Group (Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda) recommends using oil of the VW 502/505 level in gasoline and diesel engines (not equipped with particulate filters) without distinction for the presence or absence of a turbine.
In the Rosneft engine oil range, there is Rosneft Magnum Ultratec A3 oil, which has official approvals from automakers such as Volkswagen Group (VW 502 00/505 00), Renault (RN 0700/0710), Mercedes-Benz (MB 229.5), Porsche A40 and is used in both turbocharged and naturally aspirated engines.
